By tradition, RSCC has acted as the organizer of the XXI International Conference of network operators and users of Russia’s satellite communications and broadcasting network. SATCOMRUS-2016 was held with the support of the Federal Communications Agency (Rossvyaz) and the Foundation for Development underthe Center for Development and Commercialization of New Technologies (The Skolkovo Foundation).

Opening the plenary session, Igor Chursin, Deputy Head of the Federal Communications Agency, spoke about the concept of the federal target program entitled "Development of orbital constellation of communication and broadcasting satellites for civilian purposes, including HEO satellites, for the 2017-2025 period." "As part of the federal program, we plan to vigorously increase the scope of services in the geostationary orbit thanks to building seven new spacecraft. In so doing, we will concentrate on developing new types of services and on enhancing the quality and accessibility of satellite communications services. In addition, our plans envision the building of four satellites earmarked for highly elliptical orbits. Such satellites are intended not only for the polar areas, but above all, for providing mobile satellite communications and broadcasting services over the entire territory of Russia ", said Igor Chursin.

In his presentation, Yuri Prokhorov, Director General of RSCC, told the SATCOMRUS-2016 participants about the role and place of RSCC in the Internet of Things  ecosystem. He stressed that in the period up to 2020, based on the available satellite capacity, RSCC will be able to meet the growing demand for satellite communication channels to support BigData, M2M, and Internet of Things in the Russian Federation. Yuri Prokhorov also said that "in a longer-term covering the period up to 2025, RSCC sees its niche in the IoT ecosystem as provider of M2M / IoT services for mobile objects, including aviation, marine, rail and road transport."

At the SATKOMRUS 2016 conference, the Cluster of Space Technologies and Telecommunications under the Skolkovo Foundation and RSCC have announced a joint competition for the development of new technologies to advance mobile satellite communications. The Skolkovo Foundation and RSCC agreed to work jointly on promoting domestic efforts in this area. The competition is scheduled to be launched in November 2016.

The Conference was concluded with a ceremony of giving SATCOMRUS Industry Awards 2016.
